Over the last few weeks I’ve been doing a lot of behind‑the‑scenes work to keep the forums running smoothly and safely. A wave of automated bots has been hitting many online communities recently, including ours, so I’ve taken several steps to protect the site and make sure your experience stays fast, stable, and secure.
Here’s a simple overview of what’s been happening and what I’ve done:
Blocking Harmful Traffic
Some bots were trying to overload the server by sending huge numbers of requests. I’ve put systems in place to block these automatically so they never reach the forum or slow it down.
Filtering Out Suspicious Behaviour
A lot of the unwanted traffic came from bots pretending to be normal visitors. I’ve added extra checks to spot unusual patterns—like hundreds of page requests in seconds—and stop them before they cause problems.
Strengthening Access Controls
I’ve tightened up how the forum handles anonymous visitors, making sure only genuine users can access certain areas. This reduces the load on the server and keeps the community safer.
Cleaning Up Old or Fake Sessions
Some bots were generating thousands of fake “session IDs” to trick the system. I’ve added protections to prevent this from slowing the site down or creating unnecessary strain.
Improving Server Stability
By blocking harmful traffic early and reducing the load from bots, the server now has more breathing room. This means fewer slowdowns, fewer errors, and a smoother experience for everyone.
What This Means for You
- The forum should feel faster and more stable
- You may notice fewer “guests” online—that’s because the fake ones are being filtered out
- Your privacy and safety remain top priority
- All changes are behind the scenes; nothing affects how you use the forum
Alongside blocking harmful traffic, I’ve also made sure the good bots—the ones that genuinely help the forum—can still access the site. These include trusted search‑engine crawlers that keep HAVOCA visible on Google, as well as essential monitoring tools that check the forum’s health and performance. I’ve updated and improved several of our forum extensions so they work more efficiently with these trusted services, ensuring they get the access they need while keeping everything else locked down. This balance means we stay discoverable, stable, and secure without opening the door to unwanted visitors.
If you ever spot anything unusual or have questions, just let me know. Keeping HAVOCA safe, calm, and reliable is always the goal, and I’ll continue monitoring things to stay ahead of any new issues.
